My Statement of Purpose for my Student Permit Application in Canada

Hi there, this is my Statement Of Purpose (a.k.a SOP)  that I have submitted to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC) and was approved on the 11th of January 2022. Do take note that I only considered three conditions to make my SOP.

The following are the reminders I found most effective and easier to remember. These are:

1. The SOP should be direct to the point.

                                                                                Ctto: gifimage.net

In other words, the SOP should be straightforward. It should only be limited to 2-3 pages. There is never a need to use flowery words or to include unnecessary information that does not give any lift to an application.

Just tell the Visa Officer what she needs to know such as:

                🍁Family Background

                🍁Educational background

                🍁Work Experience

                🍁 Explanation of Funds

                🍁Why did you choose Canada?

🍁Why is this learning institution your chosen college?

🍁Will this program be beneficial for you when you come back to your home country?

🍁How will this program be valuable to you in the long run?

As they say, the more brief and more concise, the better the grammar will also be which is connected to our second condition.

2. The SOP should be grammatically correct.

                                                                                                                                                      Ctto: lowgif.com

We all know that Canada is an English- speaking country. It is one of their official languages aside from French. Due to this, there should always be room to check for grammar and spelling mistakes as correctness and accuracy mean credibility and how aware and how deep is your learning regarding the English Language. Thus, a grammatically correct SOP is a must!

3. The SOP should be truthful.

                                                                             Ctto: tenor.com

Canada values integrity a lot. If you try to forge information about yourself, it may not only be a cause of your student permit and visa refusal but also, a reflection of who you are. In rare cases,  some applicants get banned for a period of time before they can re-apply again. Surely, an honest SOP will reap positive feedback afterward.

On top of everything, always bear in mind to put yourself in the visa officer's shoes when you are about to read an SOP.  There are thousands of applicants that they need to check and review thoroughly. Owing to this, give your SOP some spice in order to stand out and to see that you have genuine intentions. With this, following my three sure-win ingredients in making an SOP will be give a boost in your SOP.

                                                                                                                                        Ctto: tenor.com

Feel free to read and follow my pattern and the manner I have organized mine. Happy Reading!

Best of luck in making yours!

Dear Visa Officer:

Greetings,

I am writing this letter to express my earnest interest in applying for a study permit to pursue Instrumentation Engineering Technology this coming Winter Intake 2022. My application was approved for a full-time student at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) with DLI#O18713200642. The duration of the Academe is from January 01, 2022, until December 30, 2023.

My name is Caryl Anne S. Magalong. I am a law-abiding citizen of the Philippines by birth and my dear country will always be my permanent place of residence. I am 21 years old, single, and residing with my family in General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite. I have three siblings: two males and one female. My two brothers are still in high school while my only sister is now a second-year college student at University of the East-Manila. I am a third-year undergraduate student of Electronics Engineering in the University of the City of Manila. My goal is to continue my studies in Canada to establish a strong career profile by upgrading my skills and enhancing my knowledge to incorporate high-quality, global-competitive and innovative services in technological-field industries in the Philippines. To achieve this, I would like to combine my prior knowledge in Electronics Engineering with an outstanding education that Canada offers.

I may not have any corporate experience yet but I have released an international research publication entitled “Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) Waste as Partial Coarse Aggregate Replacement for Concrete Hollowblocks” which was acknowledged by the editorial board, Asia Pacific Journal of Multidisciplinary Research last August 2020. On that note, that mentioned international paper enhanced my research skills and critical thinking that will surely be beneficial in any field of learning especially in developing, controlling and automation of machines. I also developed other skills like leadership, speaking and writing skills as I served for a year being an executive secretary of Electronics’ Engineering Student’s Society (ECESS) in my university and currently being one of the 8 board of directors (BOD) as I represent my school in a bigger association of Electronics Engineers which is the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines- Manila Chapter (IECEP-Manila) . Furthermore, I have also earned a hard skill at 10th grade by obtaining Bread and Pastry Production National Certificate II.

For the sake of saving valuable time due to recent unforeseen circumstances, instead of stagnating in this pandemic, I chose to devote my time as a COVID-19 volunteer where I performed tasks such as filing documents, encoding and communicating (voice and non-voice) with people’s COVID-19 vaccine schedules and the antigen/ RT-PCR test results in our town during this COVID-19 pandemic from August 25, 2021 to September 2, 2021. In line of this, I was able to exercise my soft skills such as communication skills and people skills -- which I deemed to be extremely important in any workplace especially industries. It was also through this volunteerism experience that I was able to broaden my skill set, go out of my comfort zone and diversify my credentials. I also started taking courses during lockdown. I attended online seminars such as Python as a programming language to be used in robotics and basics of Google Cloud Platform. I knew I needed a career that is highly marketable and can be seen in a broad range of industries.

Currently, Philippines takes up a majority of the country’s industrial sectors as industries shares around 28.4% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the latest update of 2020. This sector boasts higher employment, output and income compared to other sectors in the Philippines. With the government aiming to further invest and upgrade this sector, it is fairly noticeable that there are plenty of opportunities in the near future. Thus, Instrumentation has become a relatively significant field in terms of economic growth. In this modern age, industries are also depending on highly advanced technologies that are able to increase automation and control to improve efficiency, conserve energy while being more environmental-friendly. Because of this, both the government and private homegrown companies in my country yield a strong demand for workforce, needing trained professionals who have highly competitive career background ranging from industrial automation and electronics to oil and gas, English-proficient, adept at newest technologies, and has short learning curves.

Accordingly, after a good research for quality education, I chose Canada to gain international experience for career development as it is recognized worldwide for its outstanding and global-competitive quality of education. Along with it, Canada has an enriching cultural experience due to having diverse population resulting to having a vibrant cultural scene. Moreover, the career that I intend to finish was only offered by three institutions in the Philippines. So, the facilities, amount of learning resources and technology available offered by these institutions are limited and incomparable to what Canada can provide me to have an instrumentation-related job-ready experience and will make me a confident, prepared, and in-demand instrumentation and control technician in the future.

In line of this, to enhance my professional standing further, I want to pursue the program Instrumentation Engineering Technology in Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada because it offers a challenging, comprehensive, hands-on and technology-based education that truly encourages development of practical and lifelong skills in the long run.  The program also involves detailed studies of the principles and application of pneumatic, electronic, and microcomputer measurement and control systems. Thus, taking a two-year program related to my focus of studies in my home country will surely give a boost and strengthen my profile as it gives an international competitiveness over-all. Another benefit of this program is that it is taught by the amazing NAIT faculty who worked at fine industries all over in the major cities of Canada especially Alberta such as Ana Stefanova, William MacDonald and Negar Izadi- Najafabadi. Moreover, the instrumentation laboratories and facilities of NAIT Spartan Centre will also give me access to experience a hands-on approach unlocking advanced industry-relevant skills. Thus, studying this unique program in Canada will also assist me to succeed in meaningful careers and to put powerful impact to the potential companies I will be applying to.

To fund this endeavor, I was able to get sponsored by my mother, Anna Leah S. Magalong to pay for the entire program and cover my living expenses so that I could focus solely on my education. We have sold one of our properties amounting to 1.2 million pesos to an officemate of my mother. Meanwhile, my uncle, Christian Bernard Sapon will also support me with the accommodation, lodging, and food during the course of my studies in Canada.

My overall goal is to be a well-learned and all-around Instrumentation and Control Technician so that I can be a valuable contribution to organizations in Instrumentation and control services’ industries in the Philippines. After studies, I can take advantage of the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) granted to graduates of the IET program in NAIT to gain international working experience as I apply my in-depth knowledge regarding Instrumentation in an international setting. After that, I will go back and settle to my home country bringing IET Diploma with me from a well-recognized institution in Canada which will be a great benefit to me in terms of employment prospects as the field of industry, more so in the Philippines, is becoming more international than ever and Philippines’ employers are increasingly turning to those candidates that have overseas experience. IET diploma and work experience in Canada will look very impressive on my CV and will help my application stand out in the competitive job market in the Philippines.

I will be respectful and will abide by the rules and regulations of Canada. I will only stay in Canada for the purpose stated above. I hereby guarantee that all information stated and documents attached for your perusal in this study plan are true and accurate.

Thank you for the time you have spent reading my study plan. With high hopes and a humble request, I am sincerely looking forward to a favorable decision with regard to my study permit application.

Caryl Anne S. Magalong
